NEW ‘TIP TAX’ BROUGHT IN BY CONSERVATIVES

I’d love to be able to say this is an April Fool story… but it’s not. From 01 April, you’ll have to pay to take garden and DIY waste to the tip (recycling centre).

Soil and rubble will be charged at £2 a bag. Things covered include brick, block, stone, tiles, paving slabs etc. There are also new charges for other items…

· £2 per tyre

· £7 per bag, or sheet, of plasterboard

· £20 per bag, or sheet, of asbestos

Personally, I think this is dreadfully short-sighted of the County Council because it will lead to more fly tipping in the country side. Locally, we already see this from time to time. It is bound to get worse.

My advice – if you have rubbish to get rid of – is to do it before the end of March.
You only have to look at the pictures of Exeter to see what happens when a council gets it's rubbish collection wrong.

Bus Shelters

After three years of promises of replacements, West Teignmouth’s bus shelters are in a very sorry state. Maya and I took matters into our own hands and gave the bus shelter at the top of Mill Lane a make over. The shelter at Kingsway is in a totally dilapidated state and I’m going to demand action at Tuesday’s town council meeting.

Teignbridge Budget

Voltaire said: “In my life, I have prayed but one prayer: oh Lord, make my enemies ridiculous. And God granted it.” So it seemed at Teignbridge Council budget meeting, the Conservatives tied themselves up in knots.

"A great bit of reporting from the outstanding PRSD: http://www.peoplesrepublicofsouthdevon.co.uk/2011/02/22/tories-abstain-in-teignbridge-councils-budget/
Why would Teignbridge council’s legion of Tories not back the council’s budget that puts a freeze on council tax, doesn’t increase car park charges, gives under 16s £1 special to use leisure facilities in the summer and Easter breaks, continues CCTV support to combat anti-social behaviour, keeps the grants for Teignbridge Citizens Advice Bureau and the Council for Voluntary Service as well as others, and has £250,000 additional funds for Dawlish regeneration? Oh, of course they’re Tories and would like to see the libraries closed, fees hiked, and grants withdrawn (you see where we’re going with this)."
